We are continuing to study our common core content, standard based units in both Social Studies and Science. The children will learn about a variety of different topics and will experience both subjects each marking period in 6 week increments.
In Social Studies we will be learning about the importance of diversity in a community and how a community functions with the help of responsible citizens and government. We are excited to once again do Minitropolis which is a simulated town where the children learn how economics works in a "real life", hands on experience.
During our science period the children will be doing Mystery Science in the three areas of science. In Physical Science we are studying motion and matter, in Earth Science we will explore climate and weather and in Life Science we will be looking at the structures of life. These are hands on, exploratory units that actively involve the students in science. We will also be doing STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) activities during science period. STEAM is where we focus on these areas together not only because the skills and knowledge in each area are essential for student success, but also because these fields are all so intertwined in the real world and in how students learn most effectively. The best part is "failure" is encouraged, because when we fail, we look at the problem a different way and try again, and again, and again....until we get an answer. The children are loving the challenge and I LOVE watching them work together to solve problems.
I will also be integrating Science and Social Studies throughout their Language Arts through various texts, projects, and activities.
