Students in Kindergarten this year are working on the theme: All About Me.
Physical traits: Describing ourselves and others
Working with this theme, students will be learning how to ask and answer simple questions about themselves and others. Students learn how to tell others that they are boys or girls, tall or short, their age, their name, and the color of their hair and eyes as well as how to express their feelings.
As students work with the theme and the target language chunks, the following resources might be useful in reviewing the vocabulary they are learning.
I highly recommend Quizlet. This site is used to create electronic flashcards that can be studied on line as well as printed out. In addition to the card sets I have created for students to use, Quizlet can be searched for existing sets on any other topics, including math, science, reading, and music. The great advantage that Quizlet holds for Spanish class is that as you study the sets, you can enable audio on them, which means you can hear native speakers saying the words. This is a tremendous advantage when learning a new language. Try it out.
Greetings and Goodbyes
In this unit students will work with a variety of ways to greet others when they meet and to say goodbye when they leave. We will be using a variety of puppets this marking period as students perform short plays designed to give students practice with the language chunks they are acquiring. If you want to practice these language chunks at home, try using the story cubes in the files below. Print them out and then put them together (parents may need to help). You can roll the cube and practice saying what the cube has written on it.
If you want to hear how to pronounce the phrases on the cubes above, check out this set of Quizlet cards. Turn on the speakers or use headphones to hear the words pronounced for you by a native speaker. You can login using the username gwesstudent1 and enter the password spanishisgreat.
Here's a new feature I'll be trying out, both in class and on the webpage for students to gain additional practice. The youngest students may need help reading the questions that are posted with the videos. Watch the video and answer the questions as they come up. Pay close attention to what is said in the videos so you can answer the questions. This video is on introductions and includes some of the vocabulary we're learning in this unit.
This video is also on greetings and basic vocabulary to use when meeting someone or when you are leaving.
Here's another, longer video for you on greetings and what to say in conversations.
This video gives more information on how to greet people, ask how they are, answer them if they ask you, and say good bye.
This video lesson is about afternoon greetings. See if you an answer the questions while watching this short skit.
This video lesson contains more review of common greetings. You can watch it as often as you need to.
This video lesson reviews greetings in a song.
This video lesson reviews greetings in another song.
This video lesson reviews greetings and goodbyes.
Students learn how to name the members of their families in this unit. They will work with previously learned vocabulary to reinforce the concepts of height and eye or hair color as ways to briefly describe people in their families. Target vocabulary includes mother, father, brother, sister, grandmother, grandfather, and grandparents.

Students in this unit learn some of the basic vocabulary to describe their personalities. Target vocabulary includes active, calm, creative, artistic, serious, fun, caring, friendly, funny, and shy. In this unit, students will learn these concepts and the vocabulary to describe them through the use of drawing and labeling as well as physical movement that represents each personality.

Weather and clothing
In this unit, students will focus on the types of common weather and the vocabulary needed to describe each. Students will work with drawing and labeling as a means of gaining understanding of the concepts as well as daily reporting of the weather. Once students have been introduced to the weather concepts and words, they will build on this knowledge by adding vocabulary for clothing. This will help students describe what clothing they would need in each type of weather. Students will also explore expressing likes and dislikes for the types of weather and clothing we explore.
